Exploring Architectural Heritage: A Site Visit to Bhoganandishwara Temple
Architecture PESU RR Campus

The Faculty of Architecture at PES University recently organized an enriching site visit for first-semester students as part of their course History of Architecture – I (UA25FA132A). The visit took place on 12th August 2025 at the historic Bhoganandishwara Temple, located at the foothills of Nandi Hills near Bangalore.

Purpose of the Visit
The primary objective was to provide students with a hands-on learning experience, enabling them to observe and analyze the art and architecture of a significant heritage monument. This visit aimed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical understanding of architectural history.

About Bhoganandishwara Temple
Renowned for its intricate stone carvings and timeless design, the temple offered students a unique opportunity to study:

  • Spatial Layout – Understanding the arrangement of spaces within the temple complex.
  • Construction Techniques – Observing traditional methods used in stone architecture.
  • Architectural Details – Appreciating the craftsmanship and ornamentation that define the temple’s aesthetic.

Student Activities
During the visit, students engaged in sketching exercises, documenting structural elements and human activities around the temple. These sketches served as a vital tool for developing observation and documentation skills—essential competencies for aspiring architects.

Learning Outcomes
The site visit not only deepened students’ appreciation for historical architecture but also enhanced their ability to analyze and record architectural features in real-world contexts. Such experiential learning fosters a holistic understanding of design principles and cultural heritage.
