On August 11, 2025, the Faculty of Architecture at PES University organized a case study visit for VII Semester students to the Shanthi Nagar Bus Terminal, Bengaluru. This visit was part of the Design VII (UA22FA491A) course, aimed at providing practical insights into transportation infrastructure design.

Purpose of the Visit
The primary objective was to:

  • Analyze design elements of a major bus terminal.
  • Assess functionality and user experience in a high-traffic public space.
  • Understand how design decisions impact movement, safety, and sustainability.

Accompanied by faculty members Ar. Sharath Aithal, Ar. Madhuchand, Ar. Girija U, and Ar. Pranathi S Udupa, students explored the terminal’s spatial organization, circulation patterns, and amenities.

Key Observations
The Shanthi Nagar Bus Terminal serves as a critical node in Bengaluru’s transport network, and its design reflects a balance between:

  • Functionality: Efficient passenger flow and clear zoning.
  • User Experience: Accessibility, comfort, and safety features.
  • Sustainability: Integration of natural light and ventilation.

Students noted how design principles translate into real-world solutions, preparing them for their major project—designing a Multi-Modal Transportation Hub.

Learning Outcomes

  • Exposure to complexities of transportation design.
  • Understanding how architecture influences public mobility.
  • Insights into planning for diverse user needs in urban contexts.

Conclusion
The case study visit was an invaluable experience, bridging theory and practice. It reinforced that transportation hubs are not just functional spaces—they are dynamic environments that shape urban life. For aspiring architects, such visits provide the foundation for designing efficient, user-centric, and sustainable public infrastructure.
