The workshop explored the strength and potential of paper as a material in architectural design. The hands-on exercise helped understand the mechanical properties of paper tubes and how they can be used to create strong, sustainable structures. The introduction to Architect Shigeru Ban, a renowned Japanese architect known for his innovative use of paper tubes in construction set the context for the activity. Participants built small-scale models to understand how the tubes bear loads and contribute to the stability of a structure. The activity helped understand the concepts of compression, tensile strength, and the design principles that make paper tubes a viable alternative to traditional materials. The session highlighted the significance of sustainability in modern architecture and how unconventional materials like paper tubes can offer eco-friendly, cost-effective solutions to building challenges. The hands-on approach allowed participants to connect theory with practice, reinforcing the importance of innovative design in addressing both environmental and social issues. The workshop on Exploring Paper Tubes in Architectural Design and Material Strength was conducted by the Faculty of Architecture on May 6, 2025 at RR campus.
