The Centre for Healthcare Engineering and Learning (cHEAL), PES University organized a two-day National symposium on "Developmental Disabilities: Challenges and Solutions" from January 10-11, 2025 in collaboration with Academy for Severe Handicaps and Autism (ASHA).
The symposium aimed to raise awareness, foster understanding and create a platform for dialogue among researchers in medical and engineering domain. The goal is to share the latest research, highlight practical solutions, and empower the community to support individuals with developmental disabilities in achieving their full potential.
The symposium had four tracks: neuro-cognitive disabilities, psychological disabilities, speech and learning disabilities, and chronic physical disabilities. Every track included invited talks by a researcher, medical practitioner, and industry expert. Speakers from renowned institutions like ARTILAB Foundation, BMCRI, NIMHANS, IISc, St. Johns National Academy of Medical Sciences, Amar SevaSangam, AIISH, ASHA, Nireekshe, ChinmayaVishwaVidyapeeth, along with others were invited.
The chief guest Sri.Mohan Sundaram, CEO ARTILAB Foundation, Trustee and Board Member APD Bangalore gave the keynote address, where, he highlighted the promising assistive technology platforms for the early stages of developmental disabilities. Gamification based learning, robotics, wearable AR/VR, brain computing interface, Neuro feedback EMDR are the areas he discussed which would help in developing assistive care.
Dr. Suresh Krishnamurty, Medical Director, PES Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, and Medical Director, who is also Chief advisor of cHEAL addressed the gathering highlighting the importance of how the collaboration between engineering colleges and medical institutions would benefit research on persisting medical challenges.
Ms. Jayashree Ramesh, ASHA Foundation thanked the PES University team for organising this impactful symposium and mentioned how these events would help in bringing in awareness amongst people about disabilities and encourage research and innovation to address the challenges.
Dr. K.S.Sridhar, Registrar, PES University wished the symposium organisers and addressed the participants to make use of the impactful talks by inspiring speakers. Dr. Mamatha H R, Chairperson, Department of Computer Science and Engineering and also Director, cHEAL spoke about cHEAL and briefed about how the centre serves to foster innovation, research, and development in the field of Healthcare Engineering and Technology. She also explained the agenda and focus areas of the symposium.

ಪಿಇಎಸ್ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದ ಸೆಂಟರ್ ಫಾರ್ ಹೆಲ್ತ್ಕೇರ್ ಇಂಜಿನಿಯರಿಂಗ್ ಮತ್ತು ಲರ್ನಿಂಗ್ (cHEAL), ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿನ ಅಂಗವೈಕಲ್ಯತೆಗಳು: ಸವಾಲುಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಪರಿಹಾರಗಳು" ಎಂಬ ಎರಡು ದಿನಗಳ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ವಿಚಾರ ಸಂಕಿರಣವನ್ನು ಜನವರಿ 10-11, 2025 ರಿಂದ ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿ ಫಾರ್ ತೀವ್ರ ಅಂಗವಿಕಲತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಆಟಿಸಂ (ASHA) ಸಹಯೋಗದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಆಯೋಜಿಸಲಾಯಿತು.
ವಿಚಾರ ಸಂಕಿರಣವು ಅರಿವು ಮೂಡಿಸಲು, ತಿಳುವಳಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಬೆಳೆಸಲು ಮತ್ತು ವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯ ಮತ್ತು ಇಂಜಿನಿಯರಿಂಗ್ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಶೋಧಕರ ನಡುವೆ ಸಂವಾದಕ್ಕೆ ವೇದಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸುವ ಗುರಿಯನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದೆ. ಇತ್ತೀಚಿನ ಸಂಶೋಧನೆಯನ್ನು ಹಂಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು, ಪ್ರಾಯೋಗಿಕ ಪರಿಹಾರಗಳನ್ನು ಹೈಲೈಟ್ ಮಾಡುವುದು ಮತ್ತು ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಂಗವೈಕಲ್ಯತೆ ಹೊಂದಿರುವ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳನ್ನು ತಮ್ಮ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯವನ್ನು ಸಾಧಿಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಂಬಲಿಸಲು ಸಮುದಾಯವನ್ನು ಸಬಲೀಕರಣಗೊಳಿಸುವುದು ಗುರಿಯಾಗಿದೆ. ವಿಚಾರ ಸಂಕಿರಣವು ನಾಲ್ಕು ವಿಭಾಗವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿತ್ತು: ನರ-ಅರಿವಿನ ಅಂಗವೈಕಲ್ಯತೆಗಳು, ಮಾನಸಿಕ ಅಂಗವೈಕಲ್ಯತೆಗಳು, ಮಾತು ಮತ್ತು ಕಲಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಂಗವೈಕಲ್ಯತೆಗಳು, ಮತ್ತು ದೀರ್ಘಕಾಲದ ದೈಹಿಕ ಅಂಗವೈಕಲ್ಯತೆಗಳು, ಪ್ರತಿ ವಿಭಾಗಗಳ ಸಂಶೋಧಕರು, ವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯ ತಜ್ಞರು ಮತ್ತು ಉದ್ಯಮ ತಜ್ಞರಿಂದ ಆಹ್ವಾನಿತ ಮಾತುಕತೆಗಳನ್ನು ಒಳಗೊಂಡಿವೆ. ARTILAB Foundation, BMCRI, NIMHANS, IISc, ಸೆಂಟ್ ಝಾನ್ಸ್ ವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನಗಳ ರಾಷ್ಟೀಯ ಅಕ್ಯಾಡೆಮು, Amar SevaSangam, AIISH, ASHA, ನಿರೀಕ್ಷೆ, ಚಿನ್ಮಯ ವಿದ್ಯಾಪೀಠ ಮುಂತಾದ ಹೆಸರಾಂತ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗಳ ಭಾಷಣಕಾರರನ್ನು ಆಹ್ವಾನಿಸಲಾಗಿತ್ತು.
ಮುಖ್ಯ ಅತಿಥಿ ಮತ್ತು ಆರ್ಟಿಲಾಬ್ ಫೌಂಡೇಶನ್, ಟ್ರಸ್ಟಿ ಮತ್ತು ಬೋರ್ಡ್ ಸದಸ್ಯ ಎಪಿಡಿ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಆದ ಶ್ರೀ. ಮೋಹನ್ ಸುಂದರಂ ಅವರು ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆಯ ಅಂಗವೈಕಲ್ಯದ ಆರಂಭಿಕ ಹಂತಗಳಿಗೆ ಭರವಸೆಯ ಸಹಾಯಕ ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನ ವೇದಿಕೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹೈಲೈಟ್ ಮಾಡಿದರು. ಗ್ಯಾಮಿಫಿಕೇಶನ್ ಆಧಾರಿತ ಕಲಿಕೆ, ರೊಬೊಟಿಕ್ಸ್, ಧರಿಸಬಹುದಾದ AR/VR, ಬ್ರೈನ್ ಕಂಪ್ಯೂಟಿಂಗ್ ಇಂಟರ್ಫೇಸ್, ನ್ಯೂರೋ ಫೀಡ್ಬ್ಯಾಕ್ ಇಎಮ್ಡಿಆರ್ ಅವರು ಚರ್ಚಿಸಿದ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಗಳಾಗಿದ್ದು ಅದು ಸಹಾಯಕ ಆರೈಕೆಯನ್ನು ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿಪಡಿಸಲು ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ.
ಪಿಇಎಸ್ ಇನ್ಸ್ಟಿಟ್ಯೂಟ್ ಆಫ್ ಮೆಡಿಕಲ್ ಸೈನ್ಸಸ್ ಮತ್ತು ರಿಸರ್ಚ್ನ ವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕ ಮತ್ತು ಚಿಇಎಲ್ನ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಸಲಹೆಗಾರರೂ ಆಗಿರುವ ಡಾ. ಸುರೇಶ್ ಕೃಷ್ಣಮೂರ್ತಿ ಇಂಜಿನಿಯರಿಂಗ್ ಕಾಲೇಜುಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗಳ ನಡುವಿನ ಸಹಯೋಗವು ನಿರಂತರ ವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯ ಸವಾಲುಗಳ ಸಂಶೋಧನೆಗೆ ಹೇಗೆ ಪ್ರಯೋಜನವನ್ನು ನೀಡುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದರ ಮಹತ್ವವನ್ನು ವಿವರಿಸಿದರು.
ಶ್ರೀಮತಿ ಜಯಶ್ರೀ ರಮೇಶ್, ಆಶಾ ಫೌಂಡೇಶನ್ ಅವರು ಈ ಪರಿಣಾಮಕಾರಿ ವಿಚಾರ ಸಂಕಿರಣವನ್ನು ಆಯೋಜಿಸಿದ್ದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಪಿಇಎಸ್ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದ ತಂಡಕ್ಕೆ ಧನ್ಯವಾದಗಳನ್ನು ಅರ್ಪಿಸಿದರು ಮತ್ತು ಈ ಘಟನೆಗಳು ಜನರಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಕಲಾಂಗತೆಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಜಾಗೃತಿಯನ್ನು ತರಲು ಮತ್ತು ಸವಾಲುಗಳನ್ನು ಎದುರಿಸಲು ಸಂಶೋಧನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಆವಿಷ್ಕಾರವನ್ನು ಉತ್ತೇಜಿಸಲು ಹೇಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ಪ್ರಸ್ತಾಪಿಸಿದರು.
ಪಿಇಎಸ್ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದ ಕುಲಸಚಿವರಾದ ಡಾ. ಕೆ.ಎಸ್.ಶ್ರೀಧರ್ ಅವರು ವಿಚಾರ ಸಂಕಿರಣ ಸಂಘಟಕರಿಗೆ ಶುಭ ಹಾರೈಸಿದರು ಮತ್ತು ಸ್ಪೂರ್ತಿದಾಯಕ ಭಾಷಣಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ಪ್ರಭಾವಶಾಲಿ ಮಾತುಕತೆಗಳನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವಂತೆ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸುವವರನ್ನು ಉದ್ದೇಶಿಸಿ ಮಾತನಾಡಿದರು.
ಗಣಕ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಮತ್ತು ಇಂಜಿನಿಯರಿಂಗ್ ವಿಭಾಗದ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷೆ ಚೀಲ್ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕರು ಮತ್ತು ಡಾ.ಮಮತಾ ಹೆಚ್.ಆರ್, ಚೀಲ್ ಕುರಿತು ಮಾತನಾಡಿದರು ಮತ್ತು ಹೆಲ್ತ್ಕೇರ್ ಎಂಜಿನಿಯರಿಂಗ್ ಮತ್ತು ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ನಾವೀನ್ಯತೆ, ಸಂಶೋಧನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿಯನ್ನು ಉತ್ತೇಜಿಸಲು ಕೇಂದ್ರವು ಹೇಗೆ ಕಾರ್ಯನಿರ್ವಹಿಸುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದರ ಕುರಿತು ವಿವರಿಸಿದರು. ಅವರು ವಿಚಾರ ಸಂಕಿರಣದ ಕಾರ್ಯಸೂಚಿ ಮತ್ತು ಕೇಂದ್ರೀಕೃತ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ವಿವರಿಸಿದರು.
