Faculty orientation programme on medical education technology

The orientation programme covered a wide range of topics related to competency based medical education (CBME). This included learning domains, principles of learning, teaching learning methods, developing objectives from competencies, selecting appropriate teaching learning methods for learning objectives, attitude Ethics and communication (AETCOM) skills, and assessment in CBME. Dr. Nagendra Prasad N in his introductory remarks spoke about the importance of formal training in medical education technology for training medical students. Dr. Shyma P shared insights into the domains of learning and its progressive levels, identification of predominant domains in each competency. Dr. Vijaya S elaborated on identification of appropriate large group teaching method and its size depending on the session objectives and how to make large group teaching interactive. Dr. Raksha K Hebbar highlighted the variability in size of a small group based on learning domain and objective. Dr. Anjali, explained the method of developing objectives for a given competency in the specific phase of the course with hands-on exercise. Dr. Prakash R spoke on the need for explicit teaching of attitudes, ethics and communication skills for the present generation of student doctors and the proposed modules for different phases of the course, the possible methods for their implementation. Dr. Nagendra Prasad N talked about the role of assessment in learning, methods of assessment and importance of feedback as part of continuous assessment. He also analyzed the different approaches in traditional assessment methods and competency-based assessment and their outcomes. The faculty orientation programme on medical education technology was organized by MEU in association with the Curriculum committee of PESUIMSR for the teaching faculty on December 1, 2023.
