A Students team from PES University wins a cash prize of Rs one Lakh in the Police Hackathon organized by IIIT, Bangalore.

The students developed Fraud app detection that could detect Fraudulent apps in areas such as betting, investment, loan fraud, and fantasy sports on the Google Play Store.

Using Microsoft Azure for compute power, we collected various information from the Google Play Store using a scraper and developed a host of 8 models to detect fraudulent apps, including sentiment analysis, RC analysis, version tracer, description model, developer record analysis, and metric analysis, most of which were based on machine learning and other heuristic algorithms and were trained on data from official sources.

The hackathon saw a massive turnout, with over 14,000 registrations, including 3,000 from startups. With 9,900 registrations from Karnataka and over 1,000 from IITs, NITs and IIITs, the competition was fierce. Our problem statement (Fraud App Detection) received a whopping 1,000+ registrations and we are thrilled to have come out on top.

We would like to thank our University, teachers, mentors, and family for their guidance and encouragement.

Prof. M R Doreswamy, Chancellor of the University heartily congratulated the students on their achievement.
