Faculty of Law, PES University organized Juris Conscientia- The Law Summit, 2023 held on Monday 6th March 2023. The Summit was inaugurated by Hon’ble Mrs. Justice B. V. Nagarathna, Judge Supreme Court of India. Her ladyship delivered an address on the topic Public Interest Litigations Boon or bane for good governance.

Addressing the gathering, her ladyship established the topic through dissemination of information on the essential elements on good governance by quoting several judgements which provided insights into stances of the judiciary in guaranteeing, guarding, and protecting the right of filing a PIL. The Judge enlightened the audience on the evolution of PIL which can be traced from the failure of the criminal justice system towards the development of human rights. She stated that PIL secures accountability and transparency in ensuring good governance. The Justice also said that PIL can be filed for a “potential public injury” which will thereby guarantee the doctrine of locus standi. A meritorious letter, if it suffices cause of action and may be undertaken as a petition to deliver socio-economic justice.

She also said that PIL may be filed to secure private ends.

Her leadership concluded the session by stating that “we need to strike a balance between the good and the bad of public interest litigation. It is a weapon that must be used with great care and circumspect. It must be used only to promote good faith and cannot be allowed to appropriate private vested interests. We should ensure that PIL does not become a backdoor to temples of justice”. Her ladyship has kept the confidence in judiciary alive by always ensuring that justice is delivered. Her leadership encouraged independent thinking and dynamism which can be witnessed in her dissent in the demonetisation case. Her ladyship advised young lawyers to explore various avenues of law and to never lose sight of individual focus. Her leadership further stated that the future of the nation and the world depends on the young leaders of tomorrow.

The judge also patiently answered a volley of questions posed by the students In his presidential address Dr. M. R. Doreswamy, Chancellor of PES University motivated the students Hon’ble Justice B. V. Nagarathna’s address was preceded by the Presidential address of Dr. M. R. Doreswamy, who motivated the law students to draw inspiration from Mrs. Justice Nagarathna
