The 26th of November is celebrated across the country as Constitution day in commemoration of the adoption of the Constitution by the nation and Faculty of Law, PES University, decided to mark the day with festivity and remembrance of the yeoman contributions of the Constitution to the creation and shaping of Indian polity and society. The festivities began early with various programmes across the campus aimed at generating awareness among laymen. Later in the day, the Faculty of Law hosted and conducted a quiz on India’s Constitution, history and politics titled ‘Concours de Constitution’. Hon’ble Nadoja Dr. Justice S.R. Naik, former Chief Justice of the High Court of Chhattisgarh and former Chairperson, Karnataka State Human Rights Commission, was the Chief Guest of the event. Prof. Dr. M.R Doreswamy, Chancellor, PES University, presided over the function. The inauguration programme began with an invocation to divinity. Following this, Dr. Sandeep S. Desai, Dean, welcomed the gathering to the event and briefly explained the significance of the day and its historical antecedents. The session also saw the release of the semesterly newsletter edited and compiled by the students themselves and christened ‘Episotla’. Following this, the Hon’ble Chief Guest took to the dias and commended the role played by lawyers in India in its freedom struggle and their pre-eminent role in the framing of our Constitution. He also explained why law was a noble profession due to its inclination to service and the satisfaction of securing justice. He exhorted the current law students to recognize their position of privilege as members of the legal fraternity and take an active role in leading society. This was followed by the address of Prof. Dr. Doreswamy, Chancellor, PES University. He spoke about his days as a law student and the history of PES as an institution. He too stressed on the importance of lawyers in society. He concluded by wishing the participants of the quiz the very best. The quiz attracted a huge swarm of participants, with nearly 400 students from various colleges across Bangalore in attendance. There was rigorous and close competition from the multiple teams, but a team from the Christ Junior College were adjudged winners after a thrilling final. The day ended with an informal valedictory ceremony that also saw the distribution of prizes. All the participants and attendees of the day left the venue wiser and more informed citizens and the true spirit of the Constitution, which rests in the minds and the hearts of the people it governs, was rekindled thanks to the efforts of the Faculty of Law, PES University.
